What are field sobriety tests?
Field sobriety tests are physical (or cognitive) and interactive examinations administered by law enforcement officers who believe that an individual’s BAC level is above the legal limit. There are three standardized tests, established by the US Department of Transportation, as well as numerous others that federal enforcement officers may administer to suspected intoxicated drivers. The three standardized field sobriety tests (SFST) include the following:
- Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN)
- Walk-and-Turn (WAT)
- One-Leg Stand (OLS)
